Location of Coorg
Coorg or Kodagu as it is called locally is an amazing land in the heart of the southern Indian peninsula located in the south-western part of Karnataka bordering Kerala. Coorg is on the western Ghats loset in the middle of lofty mountains, imposing valleys and deep forests.

 

What to see in Coorg?
Madikeri: The district headquarters, Madikeri has several interesting tourist spots.

 

Madikeri Fort: The imposing structure of Madikeri Fort which was originally a mud fort was rebuilt by Tipu Sultan with stone. The fort houses the palace of the Lingayat rulers which is a simple and pale structure.

 

Abbi Falls: 5kms from Madikeri, this is a beautiful waterfall visited often by tourist from different places.

 

Omkareshwar Temple: This temple was built by Lingarajendra II in 1820 in the Mumammadan style of architecture. It is believed that the king unjustly had a pious Brahmin killed and in order to please the spirit of the Broahmin, he built the temple.

 

Raja’s Seat: Raja’s Seat is the place from where kings along with their consorts would watch the beauty of sunset. The spot gives a wonderful view of the lofty hills, green valleys, studded with paddy fields.

 

Kushalnagar: Kushalnagar is one of the finest palces in Coorg. There are various picnic spots in and around Kushalnagar like Tibetian Monastery, Veerabhoomi, Golden Temple Nisargadhama and Harangi Dam.

 

Iruppu Falls: Iruppu is a sacred place in south Coorg on the Brahmagiri ranges where River Lakshmana-tirtha flows. According to a legend, Ra and Laksman crossed this place in search of Sita. When Ram felt thirsty, Laksmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills and brought into being the river Lakshmana tirtha. This river descends into a waterfall known as Iruppu Falls.

 

Activities: Coorg is also visited for its ample outdoor opportunities. It has many trekking routes like trek from Brahmagiri to the Irrupa Falls. You can also trek to Pushpagiri, the second highest peak of Kodagu and Tadiandamol (the highest peak). You can play golf at the nine-hole course in Virajpet. You can also enjoy white water rafting at the Cauvery river.

By Air: The nearest airport is Mangalore which is about 135kms away from Coorg and Bangalore about 260kms from Coorg.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is Mysore at a distance of 146kms from Coorg.

By Road: NH 48 passes through Kodagu. The district headquarters Madikeri (Mercara), is 260 km from Bangalore and 120 km from Mysore.
